A useful dinner can still have a sense of occasion. The work is less about adding steps and more about deciding which two details will change the table.
Begin with one bright thing
A sliced lemon, a bunch of herbs, or a little bowl of salty something changes the mood of even the simplest plate.
Put the food in the middle
Bring the skillet to the table. Let everyone serve themselves. It lowers the pressure and makes an ordinary meal feel more shared.
Save a small ending
A square of chocolate, ripe fruit, or one good cup of tea is enough to tell the evening it has a proper close.
